Abstract

452,886. Working billets. ALUMINIUM, Ltd., Canada Life Building, Toronto, Canada.-(Assignees of Templin, R. L.) June 21, 1935, No. 17914. Convention date, June 22, 1934. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] In the production of aluminium &c. metal stock free from directional properties, a combination of drawing and forging operations is employed, which can be performed with ordinary metal working machinery having an attachment for the above purpose. The metal stock is worked or kneaded, first to effect a reduction in the cross sectional area and subsequently the stock is brought back to its original form. The method is broadly that described in Specification 452,885. As shown in Fig. 2, a cylinder 1, sleeve 2, and container 3 are of usual type with heating at 4 and die assembly at 8. The die assembly may be of conventional type with tool container, die holder 10, die 11, backing up piece 12, die block 13, wedge block 15, and run out table 17, A sleeve 19 is employed to ensure that the reduced billet is maintained of true shape. The billet has a collar part 27 formed by end metal not passing through the die. After the operation, the wedge block 15 is raised and the billet pushed back through the dies by an auxiliary plunger. In the next step of the process the cylinder 1 is closed by a block 30, Fig. 5, and a sleeve 33 is placed over the reduced part of the billet which slowly expands and forces back the sleeve as indicated and pressure being applied to the stock by a plunger 24.
