Abstract
988,215. Extruding; forging; working at specified temperatures. LADISH CO. Nov. 20, 1963, No. 45721/63. Headings B3H, B3P and B3V. A workpiece 14 of brittle metal, such as beryllium, tungsten or molybdenum, is forged or extruded between dies 11, 12 whilst part of its exterior is supported by a metal member 15 which is itself deformed during the operation. The heated workpiece 14 is deformed into cup shape, Fig. 2 (not shown), by a punch 11 surrounded by a hot steel support member 15 which is flattened between the dies 9, 10. The support member may be fastened to the punch 11 by a projection 11<SP>11</SP>. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the workpiece 114 supported in die 112 on a steel support 115, is extruded into throat 130 whilst the support 115 is upset into space 131. In a further embodiment, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), a solid workpiece surrounded by a support sleeve is upset between dies. The operation may be performed in a mechanical or hydraulic press or a steam hammer. Working at specified temperatures.-Beryllium is forged within the range 500-1450‹ F. with the carbon steel support member 15 at 2100‹ F. Tungsten is formed within the range 1800- 3500‹ F. Molybdenum is forged within the range 1500-2600‹ F.
