Abstract
1457600 Forging ROWEN-ARC Ltd and WELDING LIAISON Ltd 30 July 1975 [1 May 1974] 19010/74 Heading B3H A method of performing a hot forging or upsetting operation on a metallic workpiece 12 in the form of a single element comprises generating the necessary heat by friction resulting from relative movement between the workpiece and another body abutting the workpiece, e.g. a face plate 15, the workpiece being subsequently separated from the body before or after the forging or upsetting operation. The workpiece 12 is held in the chuck (7) of a known friction welding machine, Figs. 1, 2 (not shown), and its free end is located in a die cavity 14. The die is formed in two parts a block 16 and the face plate 15 and as heat is generated by the friction occurring as the workpiece is rotated, the material of the workpiece end fills the cavity 14. Alternatively the workpiece may be heated by friction and forged or upset in different apparatus. The workpiece is a rod or tube and it is of brass or other copper alloy, but it may also be of steel, aluminium or aluminium alloy. The die is of a refractory material or of a metal that will not fuse with the workpiece.
