Abstract
760,132. Forging. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd., and DONCASTER & SONS, Ltd., D. Dec. 22, 1954 [Dec. 22, 1953], No. 35668/53. Classes 83(2) and 83 (4). Making compressor blades.-A method of forging engineering parts, particularly thinsection compressor blades, comprises heating a forging blank 18 to forging temperature and locating the blank on resilient supports 14 between forging dies 10, 12, whereby the blank is suspended out of contact with the die surfaces prior to the application of forging pressure, said supports yielding to allow the blank to come into pressure contact with the stationary die 10 on application of forging pressure by the moving die, 12. The blades are preferably made of ferrous metal, aluminium, titanium and aluminium, or titanium and nickel-chromium alloys. Rod extensions 19, preferably of inferior metal, are welded to the blank and rest in the supports 14. Alternatively, extensions may be formed integrally with the blank. An end stop 20 is provided for locating the blank axially, and for this purpose the adjacent rod 19 is preferably machined to the correct length. The rods 19 are removed after the forging operation. By supporting the heated blank out of contact with the die surfaces, transfer of heat from the blank to the dies prior to forging is prevented.
