Abstract

1313370 Billet piercing CEFILAC 25 Nov 1970 [27 Nov 1969] 56124/70 Heading B3H A method of billet piercing a predrilled metal billet comprises heating the billet, flaring the end of the predrilled bore 6 using a flaring tool 4, filling the flared bore with lubricant 9, and piercing the billet with the flaring tool or with a piercing tool 10. The flaring tool 4 and the piercing tool 10 may be superimposed as shown or the piercing tool may replace the flaring tool. Alternatively the piercing tool is used for both the flaring and the piercing operation. The billet is carbon steel and the lubricant is a flexible sheet of woven glass fibre or a core of glass powder. The billets are heated to 1200‹ C. before piercing.
