Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the strongly jointed faying surface without generating excessive flush, by preheating the metal of large deformation resistance until its deformation resistance reduces to a level approximately equal to that of another metal of smaller deformation resistance, and then, by applying the friction welding. CONSTITUTION:When a copper rod 1, attached to the unillustrated rotary chuck, is to be friction welded to another aluminum rod 2, etc., attached to the unillustrated stationary chuck, the copper rod 1 is preheated to 400 deg.C in the unillustrated furnace installed separately; soon after that, the copper rod 1 is attached to the rotary chuck and is rotated at, for instance, 3000 r.p.m. for carrying out the friction welding. In this case, the deformation resistance of the copper rod 1 is approximately equal to that of the aluminum rod 2, therefore, even though the compression force for the pressure welding is smaller than that of the conventional method, new plane is generated in the faying surface, so that the weld zone including the diffused layer can be formed. Besides, the generated flush is a little.
