Abstract
1308972 Welding by pressure INSTITUT ELEKTROSVARKI IMENI E O PATONA AKADEMII NAUK UKR SSR 12 March 1970 11888/70 Heading B3R In a method of pressure welding overlapping metallic workpieces a tool is pressed progressively into one of the workpieces in a direction normal to the plane of contact of the workpieces to cause plastic deformation and metal flow and the rate at which the tool is pressed into the workpiece as welding occurs is between 0À1 and 0À6 of the rate of metal flow. Overlapping strips 4 are mounted on a displaceable support 3 below a cam-profiled roller 1. Rotation of the roller 1 grips the workpieces and progressively reduces the thickness thereof while simultanously effecting a fed movement of the strips together with the support 3. The cam profile and inclination (if any) of the upper surface of the support 3 are designed to give a predeter. mined speed of squeezing of the workpiece which at the point where welding occurs is in the desired relationship to the rate of metal flow. The latter is defined as being the rate of elongation of the workpiece under the tool. In a second embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), suitable particularly for ductile metals such as aluminium and copper and low-carbon steels the upper surface of the support is horizontal. In a third embodiment an internal boss is welded to a pipe. For welding metals of low ductility the workpieces are preferably heated to facilitate plastic deformation. Reference is made to the welding of brass and constantan, phosphor bronze and constantan, and brass and bronze and to the cladding of precision formed and heat resistant metal and alloys.
