Abstract

1462772 Welding by pressure BRITISH ALUMINIUM CO Ltd 1 Nov 1974 [1 Nov 1973] 50786/73 Heading B3R In a method of friction welding a member of steel to a member of aluminium or aluminium alloy, before the members are relatively rotated under pressure at a maximum relative velocity of 30-60 cms. per sec., the steel member is provided with a barrier layer of a metal other than steel, aluminium and aluminium alloy. The steel member is given a 10 Á layer of chromium on its welding face and the members are relatively rotated by a continuous drive means while applying an axial load, relative rotation being then stopped and a higher forging load being applied. The axial load during rotation is 0À2-0À43 tons per sq. cm. The members may have cross-sectional areas greater than that of a 75 mm. diameter bar. In an example a 2 inch diameter mild steel billet is electroplated with chromium at one end to a depth of 5Œ1À25 Á and this billet is welded to a 2 inch diameter bar of aluminium alloy containing magnesium and/or silicon.
