Abstract
1435607 Welding by pressure KAWASAKI JUKOGYO KK 1 June 1973 26367/73 Heading B3R In friction butt welding metal pipes 1a, 1b having externally bevelled ends a metal ring 3 having a radially outwardly diverging crosssection located in abutting relationship to the bevelled ends, the ring is forcibly rotated between the pipes while applying a compressive force between the pipes to raise the temperature of the abutting surfaces, the rotation of the ring is terminated and a final compressive force is applied to the pipes to weld the pipes to the ring. In an embodiment the bevelled ring 3 is of a metal, the same as or different from, that of the pipes and is provided with external gear teeth 20 and these teeth are engaged with teeth 21 on a ring gear 4 which is rotated by a gear 5 on a shaft 22. The ring 3 is rotated while the pipes are under an initial compressive force and when welding temperature is reached, rotation of the ring is stopped and an increased compressive force is applied. The ring may be of triangular cross-section as in Fig. 5 or may alternatively be of trapezoidal cross-section as in Fig. 6. A number of pairs or pipes may be welded by employing a single central drive gear to rotate a number of ring gears arranged on the insert rings.
