Abstract

1,127,375. Welding by pressure. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 16 Jan., 1967 [19 Jan., 1966], No. 2159/67. Heading B3R. In friction welding two objects 11, 12 the first object 11 is formed with an opening that has an undercut 14, a rod portion of the second object 12 is inserted in the opening and the two objects are relatively rotated whilst being pressed together so that the second object is caused to flow into the undercut. A cylindrical object 11 of grey east iron has a machined opening with a cylindrical undercut 14 into which is inserted a cold rolled steel rod 12. The cast iron member is held stationary and the mild steel rod is rotated at 2700 rpm for 15 sees. with an axial force of 5250 pounds, the rotation is suddenly stopped and the pressure is increased to 15,750 pounds when the mild steel flows to fill the undercut. The opening may be formed by coring the casting when the Heating time and initial axial forces are 25 sees. and 8750 pounds respectively. The first object may be of nodular iron, malleable iron or graphitic steel.
