Abstract
842,244. Friction couplings. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Oct. 9, 1958 [Dec. 13, 1957], No. 32289/58. Class 80 (2). In a friction coupling the radial faces 1a, 2a of flanges 1, 2 are roughened, e.g. by shot peening, grit blasting or knurling, to produce surface deformation of a thin shim 3 of soft metal clamped between the faces by bolts 4 or other means. Limited slip due to shearing-off of the localized peaks on the shim is permitted by bolt clearances 5 in the flange 1. The shim may be of the order of 0.005 inch thick, and made of copper, bronze, brass, or aluminium iron or magnesium alloy; alternatively it may be made of a hard material coated with one of these metals.
