825,152. Casting composite articles. MEIGH CASTINGS Ltd., and STOTHERT & PITT Ltd. Feb. 5, 1958 [Nov. 5, 1956], No. 33636/56. Class 83 (1). A composite article of shaftlike form comprises a steel core and a cast-on aluminium-bronze casing, the core having a crosssectional area of at least 50%, or not greater than 75%, of the total cross-sectional area of the composite article, not including the cross-sectional area of any external projections which may be formed on the casing. Examples and pump shafts, in which case the external projections may be screws, scrolls, gears or pistons, rotor shafts having portions in the forms of gears, impellers, propellers, malaxers, disintegrators or the like, or plain shafts. The aluminium-bronze is preferably a copper-base alloy containing 7- 12% of aluminium, with or without additions of other metals such as nickel, iron, manganese or silicon. In a particular embodiment the pumping element of a screw-displacement pump comprises a steel core 1 and a bronze casing 5 having external projections in the form of lefthand and right-hand screw threads 7, 9, which may be cast on after a simple sleeve 5 has been cast on to the core.
