Abstract

548,680. Alloys. STEVENS, A. H. (National Lead Co.). July 22,1941, No. 9269. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group XXXIV] A bearing has an oil-lubricated lining protected by a coating of tin-base babbitt metal. A lead alloy, preferably one having a substantial amount of tin, is cast on to a brass or bronze backing or a steel shell and the coating is applied by electrical or chemical deposition or by fusion to a depth of between 2 and 5 thousandths of an inch. The alloy may consist of antimony 2-12 per cent., copper 3-7.5 per cent and tin ; of calcium 0.075-2.0 per cent., tin 1-10 per cent. and lead to which cadmium 0.5-5 per cent. and mercury 0.1-1 per cent. may be added; silver 0.5-2 per cent., barium 0.02-0.1 per cent., strontium 0.02-0.5 per cent., copper 0.05-1 per cent., manganese 0.05-0.5 per cent. or magnesium 0.01-0.15 per cent. may be used instead of, or in addition to, the mercury, whilst 0.02-0.15 per cent. of aluminium may be included. Such an alloy may be formed by melting lead under a flux, introducing aluminium preferably. as a 50/50 per cent. alloy with tin, followed by calcium or an alloy of 5 per cent calcium and 95 per cent, lead and then the auxiliary hardeners silver, barium, strontium, copper or manganese as such or as alloys with, e.g. tin. The melt is cooled or solidified and remelted to remove the flux whereupon the cadmium, tin and/or mercury are added. Specification 548,677 is referred to.
