Abstract

760,740. Welding by pressure. ROLLSROYCE, Ltd. March 29, 1955 [March 29, 1954], No. 9193/54. Class 83 (4). In welding two aluminium base alloy cylindrical parts 10, 11 a locating spigot 12 is formed on one part to fit within the other, at least one part is anodised over the region of spigot engagement to form an insulating film, the areas to be welded being free of the film, and the parts are resistance butt-welded. In an embodiment a spigot 12, Fig. 2, with an annular partspherical flange 13 thereon is formed on a flange 11 of an axial flow compressor rotor disc. After anodizing the whole of the end of the flange 11 and the end of a flange 10 of the rotor disc parts are machined away to leave bright surfaces which are welded at 15. In a modification, a flange 16, Fig. 3, with an arcuate surface is formed on the flange 10, the spigot 12 engaging the flange with line contact. The surfaces to be welded may be masked during the anodizing.
