Abstract

1437238 Forging; stamping BROWNHILLS SHEET METAL & ENG CO Ltd 17 Jan 1975 [20 Oct 1973] 48993/73 Headings B3H and B3Q A square shoulder is formed on the end of a tube 4, e.g. a scaffolding tube, by forming a tapered or rounded shoulder on an end portion of the tube, heating the end portion to red heat and advancing an annular die 10 along the end portion to form the square shoulder against a mandrel 1. The initial forming may be performed by one or more annular dies 8, 9 mounted for axial movement by an adjustable stroke hydraulic ram. The dies 8-10 are mounted on a common holder for transverse displacement. The tube is mounted on the mandrel 1 during all the forming steps but may be removed for heating. The heating is effected by a ring of gas burners.
