Abstract
Carbon black, particularly when used as a rubber filler, is improved by a vigorous treatment with hydrogen under a pressure between 5 and 500 atmospheres and at a temperature between 200 and 500 DEG C., preferably above 350 DEG C., if desired in the presence of p suitable catalysts, e.g. oxides or sulphides of metals from groups 6 and 8, halogens and halogen compounds--hydrogen halides or organic halogen compounds. The treatment is carried out for some time--from 0,25 to 10 hours--in a pressure tight vessel, or by continuous passage through a pressure-tight vessel, preferably in shaped form mixed with a hydrocarbon oil of low boiling point. According to an example, carbon black derived from natural gas, acetylene or from carbon monoxide is treated for 6 hours with hydrogen under a pressure of 200 atmospheres and at a temperature of 430 DEG C. in the presence of a nickel catalyst: or for 8 hours at 415 DEG C. under a pressure of 20 atmospheres in the presence of 0,2 per cent, referred to hydrogen of hydrogen chloride. The process may also be applied to carbon black obtained by the incomplete combustion of anthracene oil, tar or pitch residues.ALSO:Carbon black, particularly for use as a rubber filler, is improved by a vigorous treatment with hydrogen under a pressure between 5 and 500 atmospheres and at a temperature between 200 and 500 DEG C., preferably above 350 DEG C., if desired in the presence of suitable catalysts. The treatment is carried out for some time-from 0,25 to 10 hours-in a pressure-tight vessel, or by continuous passage through a pressure-tight vessel, preferably in shaped form mixed with a hydrocarbon oil of low boiling point.
