Abstract

451,441. Jointing tubes to headers. ISHERWOOD, N., Salop Street Works, Salop Street, Bolton. March 6, 1935, No. 6976. [Class 99 (i)] In a radiator for the circulation of the cooling- water in internal-combustion engines wherein each of a number of tubes is connected to headers by means of stuffing - box joints, each comprising a hollow member screwed into a header and a gland nut for compressing packing-material against the tube, the tubes are shorter in length than the distance between the headers whereby the tubes may be moved laterally parallel to themselves for removal or replacement. A nipple 2 is screwed into the bottom plate 3 of the top header of a radiator, and a nut 4 slidable on the end b of a tube c is screwed on to the nipple, a hoop 5 and packing-rings 5<a> being interposed as shown. A similar joint is provided at the opposite end of the tube c. In modifications, (1) the end b fits inside the nipple 2 and a single packing-ring is inserted between the member 4 and the end of the nipple, and (2) the nipple 2 is replaced by a short tube screwed into the plate 3, and the member 4 screws into an enlarged hole in the same plate.
