Abstract

450,226. Drawing magnesium wire. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. Oct. 5, 1934, No. 28578. Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, May 1, 1935]. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Working at specified temperatures.-Magnesium or alloys thereof are drawn at a temperature between 250‹ and 400‹ C., preferably 350‹ C., and with a successive decrease in circumference preferably less than 6 per cent per die, for example 2 to 5 per cent per die. The dies may be heated to the required temperature, and the wire may be preheated before reaching the die to 450‹ C. A rod may be first reduced by hammering, the reduction being completed by drawing, numerical examples of dimensions, degrees of reduction, and speed of drawing being given in the Specification. The hammering may be effected above 250‹ C., preferably at 400‹ C. The dies may be of diamond or of the alloy sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Widia." Thin bands may be obtained by suitably forming the final dies, or a wire may be reduced to band form by rolling. Rape oil may be used as a lubricant in drawing. Reference is made to the drawing of tungsten or molybdenum at 800‹ C., with a reduction of at most 8 per cent per die.
