EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Metal powder mixture based on a high-speed steel alloy with the addition of hard materials for the powder-metallurgical production of cutting tools
EMI1.1
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The powder additives preferably have a particle size of 1 to 10 μl.
The addition of kappa or eta carbide is particularly effective in restricting grain growth.
The addition of up to 5% titanium carbide has an extremely beneficial effect on the toughness of the material.
In the manufacture of objects from the metal powder, the base powder and the additives are thoroughly mixed, compacted in a steel mold and finally sintered according to the known technology of powder metallurgy or any deviations from it. Instead of compaction in a steel mold, other types of pressing technology such. B. hot pressing can be used. Cutting tools produced by this method can be manufactured in such a way that their properties and usefulness are roughly between those of high-speed steel tools produced by conventional methods and carbide cutting tools.
Although the objects are generally produced during sintering in a shape which approximately corresponds to the final desired shape, so that only minor processing is necessary, the metal powder mixtures according to the invention can also be compacted or sintered to a shape which is suitable for subsequent hot working in order to then obtain the final desired shape. For example, billets can be formed which are subsequently machined by forging or pressing. It was found that the characteristic properties of the sintered high-speed steels, such as a fine grain size and uniformity of the structure, are retained after such a heat treatment.
For the high-speed steel powder base, for example, several alloys of the types melted by the Jessop-Saville Limited company and marketed, which are designated as J. 13, J. 18, J. 30 and J. 34, are mentioned. The nominal composition of these alloys is essentially:

Another example of a suitable additive to a high speed steel powder with 0.76% carbon, 4.25% chromium, 1.40/0 vanadium, 18.0% tungsten (J.30) making up 991o of the final metal powder mixture is additive of 1% titanium carbide, which increases the notch strength. Another example of a suitable additive to the same high speed steel powder (J. 30) above that makes up 900/0 of the final metal powder mix is the addition of 10% niobium carbide, which greatly improves the cutting ability at high speeds.
