Abstract
514,461. Lubricating-compositions. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E.I. May 6, 1938, No. 13630. Convention date, May 6, 1937. [Class 91] An improved lubricating-composition consists of a petroleum lubricating oil and a small proportion of a hydrogenated castor oil derivative obtained by causing hydrogenated castor oil to react either with its own free OH group or with another neutral compound containing at least 6 C atoms selected from the group comprising alcohols, aldehydes, isocyanates and thiocyanates at temperatures of 80 to 550F. in the presence of a catalyst. The castor oil derivative acts as pour-point depressant. The reaction is carried on till the hydrogenated castor oil has been so modified that it softens between 70 and 160F., preferably between 90 and 150F. The time of reaction with a catalyst present is about 2 to 8 hours and 16 to 64 hours without. The catalysts preferred are alkali metals, alkali metal alkoxides, alkalineearth metal oxides, lead oxide, tin oxide, aluminium oxide, chromium oxide, or nickel oxide. In an example, hydrogenated castor oil is heated to 392F. for 2 hours with a 1 per cent. of PbO. The product is a soft wax, softening at 131 to 149F. and a 1 per cent. addition depresses the pour-point of a partly de-waxed paraffin oil from 25F. to -20F.
