Abstract
A catalyst containing silica gel having a surface area from 250-350 sq. in./gm., 18-30% Cu, 0.3-3.5% Cr and 0.5-9% alkali metal is used to hydrogenate (a) diethyl-hexanol adipate to 1:6 hexane diol (b) dibutyl sebacate to 1:10 decane diol (c) ethanol and adipic acid to 1:6 hexane diol (d) 1:6 hexane diol and adipic acid to an unspecified product, and (e) various naturally occurring fatty oils, e.g. coconut oil, sperm oil, and castor oil to the corresponding alcohols. French Specification 889,~91 is referred to.ALSO:In the manufacture of a hydrogenation catalyst silica gel having a surface area of about 250-350 sq.m./gm. is impregnated with such amounts of a Cu compound, a Cr compound and an alkali metal compound that after being dried the silica gel contains from 18-30% Cu, 0,3-3,5% Cr and 0,5-9% alkali metal, the percentages being calculated on the total weight of the catalyst. If desired the alkali metal compound, e.g. Na or K salts, and Cr compound may be replaced by a chromate or bichromate of the alkali metal. Example 1 describes the impregnation of silica gel with basic copper carbonate, ammonium bicarbonate, chromic anhydride and potassium hydroxide. French Specification 889,791 is referred to.
