Abstract
The hydrogenation of unsaturated organic compounds in the liquid state is effected with catalysts consisting of a mixture of chromium oxide and copper oxide or a mixture of chromium oxide and zinc oxide prepared in a compact form by the oxidation of an alloy of the two metals. The oxidation may be effected by anodic oxidation in an aqueous or other electrolyte or by the action of an oxidizing acid, such as nitric acid, followed by conversion to oxide. The catalyst may be treated with hydrogen under conditions such that substantial or complete reduction of one but not more than one of the components takes place. The hydrogenation is preferably effected in a continuous manner and the process may be applied to the hydrogenation of ethylenic, acetylenic or benzenoid linkages and to the hydrogenation of aldehydic or ketonic carbon-oxygen groups. According to examples, (1) an unsaturated oil of the glyceride type, e.g. cotton or whale oil, is hydrogenated at 150 DEG C. and under a pressure of 200 atmospheres using a chromium oxide-copper oxide catalyst obtained by anodic oxidation of a copper-chromium alloy. (2) Benzene is hydrogenated under the conditions stated in the above example. (3) Acetone is converted into iso-propyl alcohol at 150 DEG C. and under a pressure of 150 atmospheres using the catalyst specified above.
