Abstract

A lubricating grease is made by thickening to a grease consistency with an alkali metal soap of a hydroxy fatty acid a liquid petroleum lubricating oil base stock consisting of or containing an aromatic fraction which has been separated from a petroleum lubricating oil fraction. The base stock may be prepared by blending a petroleum lubricating oil fraction, e.g. a dewaxed vacuum distillate having a viscosity in the range of 45-200 Redwood I seconds at 140 DEG F., and an aromatic fraction which has been separated from the same or different petroleum lubricating oil fraction. Solvent extraction or chromatography may be used to separate the aromatic fractions, and in the latter case the chromatographic column, e.g. silica gel, or activated clay, may be eluted with acetone, ethyl alcohol, methyl alcohol, iso-propyl alcohol, ethyl ether, or iso-propyl ether to remove the aromatic fraction, and petroleum ether, n-hexane, or iso-octane to remove the aliphatic materials. The soap, e.g. lithium hydroxy stearate, may be prepared by the saponification in situ of hydrogenated castor oil.
