Abstract

720,470. Making turbine &c. blades. OMES, Ltd. May 7, 1952 [May 7, 1951], No. 10723/51. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Forging.-In the manufacture of turbine blades and the like, e.g. of aluminium-bronze or other metal which is somewhat brittle when cold, the blade is forged approximately to shape in dies leaving a "flash " and then finished by coining, preferably hot, between dies and, while thus held, the "flash " trimmed off. The blank formed by the first forging operation has locating nibs and the coining dies 30, 12 have corresponding formations 17, 18, Fig. 3. The die 12 is machined with parallel sides to slide closely through the fixed trimming die 20. This may comprise two parts 21, 22. The die 12 is carried by a holder 19 supported by pins 23, a plate 24, and springs strong enough to resist the forging pressure but to yield, for trimming, when the press ram 29 moves the die 30 down further. The die holder 19 has parallel sides 31, 32 with lubricant grooves 33 and slides vertically within guide blocks 35, 38, 39, Fig. 2 (not shown), carried by the base 11.
