448,736. Bomb-dropping apparatus. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH AIRCRAFT, Ltd., SIR W. G., and LOCKWOOD, S. W. D., Whitley, Coventry. May 7, 1935, No. 13415. [Class 9 (ii)] Relates to apparatus for dropping bombs from aircraft, of the kind in which the bomb is guided out by a radius-rod device, for example as described in Specification 419,563. According to the invention the outward movement of the radius rod 12, which is pivoted at 13, operates a cam mechanism for opening the door of the bomb receptacle and holding it open until the radius rod is again withdrawn into the receptacle. As shown, the radius rod is provided with a cam 17, which bears on a roller 19, when the rod swings out, and thereby rocks an arm 20 about its pivot 21. The arm 20 is coupled by a link 22 to a crank 23 fast on a tubular shaft 24 to which the door is attached. An abutment 25 may be provided on the radius rod to strike a roller 26 on the link 22 to initiate the movement of the door ; or two cams,may be provided, one to initiate the movement of the door, and the other to complete the movement. The radius rod is returned to the inward position by a tension spring 29 connected by a pair of cables 27, 28 to a plate on the shaft of the radius rod, this arrangement of cables and spring acting as a spring check when the radius rod reaches its inward position. Specification 416,884 is referred to for doors opened by the dropping bombs or independently.
