Abstract

1,239,915. Door closing and checking mechanism. STANMORE SPRINGS Ltd. 7 Aug., 1968 [15 May, 1967; 28 Sept., 1967], Nos. 22318/67 and 44293/67. Heading E2M. [Also in Division F2] A hydraulic check floor spring comprises a housing 4 having a journal mounting for a stub or socket 7 which engages with a door to be controlled, a two-lobed cam 8 connected to the stub and cooperating via a displaceable beam 12 with a spring assembly or assemblies 13 to provide a restoring force to close the door, means by which the restoring force is modified during the latter stage of closure so that a substantially instantaneous increase in the force occurs, and a second cam 9 connected to the stub and cooperating with a hydraulic dashpot to provide damping during closure, the cam being so shaped that the degree of damping increases as the door closes. Each spring assembly comprises a tubular socket 30, attached to an adjustable abutment 15, within which a rod 32 attached to the beam can slide. A sleeve 34 with a collar 36 slides on the rod and compression springs 38 and 40 abut the collar so that as the door nears its fully open position, all compression takes place in the spring 40 to produce a sudden increase in the restoring force. In a single acting device, only one spring assembly and one of the cam lobes 8 are used. In a modification (Figs. 3 and 4), the relative lengths of the springs 38 and 40 may be adjusted by means of nuts 62, 64 and 66. Also, the maximum angle of opening of the door can be adjusted by means of a socket 68 which can abut the sleeve 34.
