Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A pneumatic damper for controlling the closing of doors and gates comprises a cylinder C having a pivoted yoke Y for attachment to a door frame or gate post and a piston P slidable therein, the end E of the piston rod being attachable to a door or gate. The cylinder is provided with air outlets A at one end, an adjustable restricted air inlet V at the other end, and holes or slits S therebetween. The piston is of the cup-type. On closing the door or gate, the piston is moved to the right and a partial vacuum is created in the left-hand end of the cylinder, retarding the piston until the piston passes the holes S. No retardation occurs when the gate or door is opened, as air is able to pass by the piston as the latter moves to the left. In modifications, instead of utilising a cup-type piston as a one-way transfer valve, a non-return outlet valve may be provided at said other end, or a one-way transfer valve may be provided in the piston permitting transfer of air from said other end to said one end of the cylinder. A compression spring may be provided in the cylinder acting between piston P and the left hand end of the cylinder to provide a force acting to close the gate or door.
