889,154. Door operating appliances. PARKES & SONS Ltd., JOSIAH, MAITLAND, D. S., and TREDWELL, G. L. Nov. 25, 1960 [Dec. 16, 1959], No. 42718/59. Class 65(1). A door closer comprises a piston 11 in an hydraulic cylinder 10, moving on opening a door against the action of the spring 12 and the working fluid being displaced through the non-return valve 16; on release of the door, spring 12 tends to reverse the motion of the piston 11 and cause the door to close, the working fluid returning to the other side of the piston by two restriction valves 17, 18 and the associated flow tube 29. The restriction valve 17 controls the speed of flow of fluid through the passages 27, 24, 28 and operates throughout the movement of the piston. The second restriction valve 18 operates over the last part of the closing movement to increase the speed and ensure closure or latching of the door, being brought into action by the piston moving the hollow plunger 30 with ports 34 in an external annular recess 33 (acting as an auxiliary valve) so that the ports 34 are open to the valve 18 through which the fluid passes to the chamber 24 and thence through the return tube 29 to the low pressure side of the piston. The safety valve 37 allows the door to be forcibly closed without subjecting the closer to unduly high pressures. The door is connected to the spindle 15 by a suitable link mechanism.
