Abstract

978,693. Door closers. RONAN & KUNZL Inc. Feb. 7, 1963, No. 5099/63. Heading E2M. Mechanism for connecting the piston rod 6 of a spring door closer and hydraulic check device to a swing door comprises a pair of mounting plates 8, 9 secured together in spaced relation, a shaft 5 journalled in the plates and adapted to be engaged in a suitable socket in the door, crank arms 24 extending in opposite directions from the shaft and carrying crank pins 29, and a cam plate 11 slidable longitudinally between the mounting plates and coupled to the piston rod 6, the cam plate having a central opening 22 the edges of which co-operate with the crank pins 29 and have hold-open peaks 35, 39. The mechanism is adapted to be mounted in the lintel of the doorframe. The cam plate carries rollers 13, 14 guided in grooves 19, 20 in the mounting plates 8, 9, the rollers 13 at one end of the plate being a relatively close fit in the grooves whilst the rollers 14 at the other end are relatively loose. When the door is closed the crank pins 29 seat in recesses 30 in the cam plate 11, and when a definite opening force is applied to the door the torque transferred to the cam plate causes the latter to swing sufficiently for one of the crank pins to leave its recess and move along the edge 31. The peaks 32 hold the door closed against wind pressure; in the fully open position the pins 29 are held by the peaks 35 and 39 respectively. If it is desired to prevent the door from being held in either fully open position the appropriate one of the two pawls 41 is turned by means of its regulating screw 42 to block the movement of the crank arms 24 so that the pin 29 does not reach the peak 39. To prevent opening movement in either direction a blocking screw can be inserted in one of two tapped holes 44 in the cam plate to abut the crank arms.
