Abstract

1332480 Door closer ARCHITECTURAL HARDWEAR Ltd 30 Nov 1970 56864/70 Heading E2M A door closer containing a spring and a dashpot also includes a "stand-open device" which comprises a resiliently loaded plunger acting between a stationary part and a moving part of the closer and engageable in a notch in the other part of the closure, and a braking means incorporated in the closure to retard the movement of the moving part adjacent to the position at which the plunger will engage the notch. As shown the closer is operated by rotation of spindle 20 which meshes with teeth 24 cut in one face of a slot 26 in the piston 12, against the action of springs 28. As the door reaches its open position a steel ball 78 resilently mounted in the housing by spring 80 engages in a groove 82 in the head 13 of the piston 12. The loading applied by spring 80 can be adjusted by turning cap 76. In the open position, the piston covers port 62 of a by-pass passage, and fluid can only leak from the piston through the clearance between the piston head 15 and the bore 14 of the housing 10. When the head 15 uncovers the port 62 there is a by-pass through port 62 and passage 68 and either of ports 64 and 66. The setting of a restrictor valve in the port 62 causes considerable resistance to the closing door. Near the closed position only the resistance of a valve in port 66 is effective. Other embodiments are described with a plunger in the piston head 13 and the notch in the housing 10.
