Abstract
603,393. Door-operating appliances. TEGERDINE, G. E. Oct. 19, 1945, No. 27545. [Class 65 (i)] A spring door-closing device designed to provide sufficient force for final closing without providing excessive force during the early part of the closing movement, has two or more springs which come into action successively. The device comprises a rod 8 screwed into a lug 4, by which it is pivoted to the door, and sliding in a cylinder 6 provided with a lug 5 for pivotal attachment to the door frame, two springs, or sets of springs 18, 19, arranged in the cylinder and separated by a collar 15 slidable on the rod, and an abutment 12 carried by a sleeve 11 which is adjustably screwed on the rod and moves with it. When the door is closed the parts are in the position shown, the collar 15 being held against movement in the cylinder by balls 16 in radial bores in the collar engaging a groove in the cylinder. As the door is opened, the rod moves into the cylinder and the abutment 12 compresses the spring 18 against the collar 15 until a groove 21 in the rod is brought into register with the balls 16 ; the balls, which are larger than the space between the rod and the cylinder, then move into this groove to lock the collar to the rod, thus holding the spring 18 compressed, and free it from the cylinder, so that in further movement of the rod the collar 15 compresses the spring 19. Closing of the door is effected by the spring 19 until the collar 15 has returned to the position shown, whereupon it becomes locked to the cylinder again and the spring 18 completes the closing.
