[Class 83 (iv)] The vertical rolls 3 of a universal rolling mill are driven independently of the horizontal rolls 2, by separate electric motors 4, couplings 5, and reduction gearing 6 so that when the mill is reversed the relative slight difference in speed of the pairs of rolls can be adjusted as required, so eliminating the fixed speed relationship in usual gearing from a common drive. A regulator is associated with the reversing switch mechanism automatically to adjust the relative speeds.
