Abstract

467,144. Rolling. STEVENS, A. H. (United Engineering & Foundry Co.) Oct. 28, 1936, No. 29289. [Class 83 (iv)] The vertical rolls 5, 6 and their housings and gear drive, of a continuous mill are balanced between a pair of side plates 44, by counterweights 55, so that the rolls, housings and gear drive can be adjusted vertically e.g. by a motor driven screw 57, to align the roll grooves with the grooves of the adjacent roll passes or to move it completely out of the rolling path. The rolls &c. may also be adjusted sideways by mounting the complete housing on slides and moving it by screw 126 in which case the wobbler shaft 146 can telescope. Instead of balancing the housings, rolls, &c. they may slide in vertical guides and be adjusted by vertical screws 133, Fig. 5. The housings for the gearing 33, 35, &c., are coupled to the roll housings.
