A universal roll stand comprises two frames which, including the vertical rolls secured in them, can be moved on soleplates by four horizontal screwed spindles, the vertically adjustable horizontal rolls being retained in their axial position independently of the frames, and the drive for the spindles, which are all in driving engagement with each other, being secured to one frame. The chocks 5-8 of horizontal rolls 3 and 4 and 38 and 39 of vertical rolls 36 and 37 are secured in the frames 1 and 2 of a universal stand, four screwed spindles 19-22 (Fig. 2, not shown) being synchronously driven by two motors 31 to shift the frames 1 and 2 equally and oppositely on soleplates 15. Alternatively, frame 2 may be fixed such that frame 1 and also the pass line moves, the use of non-telescopic roll driving spindles then being possible. Motors 13 acting through screws 9 and 10 give vertical adjustment of the rolls 3 and 4. The chocks 5-8 of the rolls 3 and 4 are attached by pairs 60 to the chocks of rolls 36 and 37, the chocks 5-8 sliding over the moving roll spindles as the frames and vertical rolls are adjusted. The chocks of rolls 36 and 37 are in turn clamped to the frames 1 and 2. As shown in plan (Fig. 5, not shown) cams 44 and 45 on rotatable shafts 42 and 43 can co-operate with slots 44b, 39a, 44b and 38a in the roll chocks 39 and 38. Drives 48 rotate the shafts 42 and 43. The horizontal rolls are adapted to be connected, at their ends remote from the roll driving spindles, to the screwed spindles 19-22. To this end the rolls are provided with lateral extensions for engagement by pivoting arms 53. These arms can be held in or out of engagement with the extensions by means of cylinders 54. Hand wheels 57a and 55b, Fig. 1, allow adjustment of the axial position of the extensions on each roll spindle. Balancing of the rolls is by mechanisms 61 and 64. Reversal of the entire roll set is possible by retraction of the screwdowns, rotation of the cams 44 and 45 and hydraulically raising rails 41 until the roll set is supported and can be shifted laterally. The vertical roll chocks may be replaced by spacers and the stand used as a 2-high mill. Hydraulic expanders (Fig. 3, not shown) are situated between frames 1 and 2 to prevent backlash when operating the screwed spindles.
