Abstract

A cold rolling pilgrim mill is provided with a reciprocable roll stand whose rolls 1 are rotated by the engagement of pinions coupled to the roll ends with fixed racks 2, the racks being movable from their fixed positions to allow adjustment of the rolls. Each roll is provided with two grooves in its periphery, each extending through 180 degrees. When the groove in use becomes worn, it is replaced by the other groove by rotation of the roll through 180 degrees relative to the rack. This relative movement can simply be arranged by unclamping a rack 2 of sufficient length and shifting it axially until the roll has rotated through 180 degrees. Alternatively, a wedge 3 which is used to adjust the meshing clearance between the rack and pinion can be shifted until the rack is moved out of mesh with the pinion. The pinion can then be rotated as desired. In a further form, Fig. 3, each rack is laterally movable out of engagement with the associated pinion by screws 6.
