448,052. Linear - dimension gauges. COMLEY, R. J., Knelston, Robert Street, Manselton, Swansea. Jan. 3, 1935, No. 262. [Class 106 (ii)] A double-reading callipers comprises two legs, two scales and two pointers, one being adapted to be set by moving the legs bodily by hand relatively to a fixed casing, whilst the other is automatically movable in conformity with the movements of a calliper leg. Two legs b, c, with ball contact members f are hinged together at d, the hinge being surrounded by a spring e. The casing a is centrally slotted to receive an extension g of the hinge pin d. This member g is movable in the slot h and carries a pointer j moving over a scale k on the casing. Means are provided for clamping the pointer at any reading. The casing also contains a distance pin l which prevents the legs coming together under the influence of a spring l<1>. The pin l also serves as a pivot for a pointer m adapted to move over a scale n with a central zero on either side of which are readings expressed as percentages above and below the figure for which the pointer j has been set. In use, the pointer j is set at the nominal thickness to be measured. The legs are now separated by means of the push rod p and then applied to the tube to be measured, being allowed to engage the work under the action of spring l<1>. An abutment o on the pointer m engages the leg c and the pointer takes part in the movement. In a modification, a pin is provided on the push rod to prevent the legs from coming together, and the rod is provided with a knife edge to engage the upper end of the pointer. The scale k is also arranged on one of the logs.
