[Class 100 (ii)] Set - off, preventing.-A spraying device consisting of one or more nozzles 33 is arranged on a printing- machine, over the rear edge of the fly board, for spraying printed sheets with hot wax, or similar substance, adapted to prevent smearing of the sheets, the nozzles 33 being carried by a rocking shaft 11 which causes jets of the spray to be swept across the printed sheet. The container 26 for the wax &c. is carried by an arm 13 attached to the machine frame 1, and the shaft 11 and the control lever 24 for controlling the jets are operated by lever-and-link mechanism from a crank 3 on a one-revolution shaft 2. The crank 3 oscillates by a link 5 a bell - crank lever 6 which reciprocates a rod 9 connected to an arm 10 on the shaft 11. Prior to the oscillation of the nozzles 33 a roller 32 on the rod 9 operates a bell-crank lever 15 which raises a rod 19 connected to the control lever 24, and the lever 24 is held in the open position of the nozzles by means of a spring catch 25. The catch 25 is finally released by a cam 28 on the shaft 11 when the spray is to be cut off, the nozzles then pointing vertically downwards. Motion is transferred from the rod 9 to the lever 15 by means of a roller 32 which acts on a spring-controlled lever 20 abutting against stop 22 on the lever 15. On the downward movement of the rod 9, the roller 32 can snap past the lever 20. The lever 15 is normally pressed by a spring 16 against a stop 12, and the lever 15 is connected to the rod 19 by a pin-and-slot connection.
