Abstract

416,511. Printing-machines; feeding sheets. PRATT, F., 23, Junction Road, Warley, Essex. March 17, 1933, No. 8164. [Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii).] A printing-press which is especially applicable for printing on collapsed cardboard cartons comprises a platen 1 which is reciprocated horizontally between a magazine 2, from which the bottom carton is separated by the aid of raised portions of the platen 1 which act as pusher separators, and the separated carton is held by suction apertures 18 in the platen 1. Coacting with the platen is a vertically reciprocating type-carrying cross piece 27 on which the type member 7 is adjustably mounted. The type descends on to the sheet when the platen 1 is at its extreme right-hand position, and after the impression the suction is cut off, and as the platen moves to the left strippers 56 arranged in front of the magazine 2 cause the blank to be delivered down a shoot 8 fitted with a delivery roller 66 or with a pair of delivery rollers one of which is coated with blotting material. The platen 1 is reciprocated in guides by a link and an oscillating lever 10 on a shaft 11 which is rocked from a cam on the main shaft 9. Cushioning springs 63 are provided on a rod 61 to control the movement of the platen. The air pressure in the platen is controlled by a slide valve which is reciprocated in a chest 20 by a cam on the shaft 9. The cross piece 27 is carried by rods 28 which are raised in guides 29 by means of an oscillating lever which acts on a cross-bar 30. The type descends under the action of gravity or of springs 37 when a cam on the shaft 9 permits descent of the oscillating lever. A trip lever 38 may hold the type in the raised position when desired. The type is normally inked when in the raised position by a travelling roller 39 which is carried by links 44 operated by oscillating levers 43 operated from the oscillating shaft 11. The roller 39 receives ink from a disc 42 which is rotated intermittently by the operation of a gravity pawl 59 carried by a lever 48 which is moved clockwise by the shaft of the roller 39 as this moves to the right and returns by the action of a spring 49. The pawl 59 engages holes 50 on the underside of the disc 42 and rotates the disc intermittently. A counting-device 64 is operated by a trigger 65 on the type head.
