[Class 100 (ii)] In a mailing machine the taking of non- metered impressions is prevented by the cooperation of a pair of obstructing devices which obstruct the surface of the printing-die 13 except at the moment when printing is effected by the raising of a platen 14 to press the letter L against the die. As shown in Fig. 2 at the commencement of the printing stroke the inking-roller 17 obstructs the die, and when this is withdrawn by the action of a lever 19 operated from the drive shaft 22 by a lever 24 and pin- and-slot connection, a rocking member 33 is moved counterclockwise against the action of a spring 36 by a cam slot 41 of a cam 39 on the shaft 22. This depresses the bent end 34 of the rocking member 33 through an aperture in the die as soon as the roller 17, has moved past the aperture. The rocking member is moved to withdraw its bent end 34 by the dwell 43 of the cam 39 and the platen 14 is moved at the same time to printing position and pressure is kept upon the letter until the cam member 39 reaches the end of its stroke as shown in Fig. 4. In this position a too 44 on the rear end of the rocking member 33 releases a latch 46 which normally holds a spring member 47 which on release moves under action of a spring 54 to the position shown in Fig. 5. On the return motion of the shaft 22 the cam 39 permits the end 34 to protrude again through the die, the movement being limited by engagement of the toe 44 with the member 47. The parts are finally restored to the position shown in Fig. 2.
