Patented Dec. 22, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
CARL F. FRAUENBERGER, OF LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK,'ASSIGNOR TO S. H. ROSENBERG, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SIDE REGISTERING DEVICE.
Application filed April 23, 1925. Serial No. 25,190.
'1'0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CARL F. FRAUENBER- GER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Long Island City, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side Registering Devices, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to a paper side reglster for platen printing presses, cutters, creasers and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a side register of simple, practical and novel construction particularly well adapted for use with heavy platen presses in which the platen is operated by means of pivoted connecting rods from the driving mechanism of the press.
Another object of the invention is to provide a side register adapted to be operated gradually to shift the paper on the platen as the latter closes on the impression.
With the foregoing objects in view my invention is disclosed in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a partial side view of a press equipped with my improved side register.
Figure 2 is a partial face view of the platen showing the operation of the device.
Figure 3 is a detail view of the paper pushing or moving means.
Referring to Figure 1 the press illustrated is of a well known type comprising in general a suitable framework or support 5 having a fixed bed 6 and a platen 7. The latter is operated from the press by connecting rods 8, one on each side of the press to rock or oscillate the platen on a track 9 in a well known manner.
In operation, the paper, indicated at 10 in Figure 2, is fed against the usual stops 11, During the passage or movement of the paper along the surface of the platen to'final printing position, the sheet must be accurately registered against a fixed stop 12 which is aflixed to the platen by the operator in suitable position depending upon the character of the work.
My improved side register is designed to accomplish the movement of the paper towards the said side stop 12.
The side registering device consists of a bracket 13 secured to the side of the platen. The bracket carries two fixed rods 14, 14
upon which slides a block 15. The block carries a register arm 16 adjustably mounted in the block by a bolt 17 and slot 18.
The block is operated to slide on the rods by means of a cam lever 19 pivoted to the bracket 13 at 20 and pivotally connected to the block by the aforesaid bolt 17 A spring 21 urges the block outward away from the platen as is obvious.
The register arm 16 carries a paper moving finger 22 in the form of a thin spring suitably curved to engage the edge of the paper.
The cam lever 19 is spaced a predetermined distance from the edge of the platen so that it will be engaged and actuated by the connecting rod 8.
The operation is as follows: When the platen moves into sheet rece ving position as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1, the connecting rod. 8 is out of touch with the cam lever 19.
While the platen moves into printing position, the connecting rod 8 engages the cam lever 19 and as shown in Figure 2. the operation of the cam lever by the connecting rod causes said lever to move the block 15 inwardly on the rods 14 and hence moves the register finger 22 into contact with the paper to push the latter against the side 12 to register the sheet.
As the press opens up, the cam lever moves away from the connecting rod, and the.
spring automatically moves the side register outwardly in the platen, and the parts are then ready for the next registering operation.
It will be seen that the register is actuated solely by the connecting rod, and therefore, operates in perfect synchronism with the press. It is very easily attached by means of screws and. does not interfere with the operation of the press.
I claim 1. The combination with a platen press, the platen and its operating means, of'a side registering device comprising a bracket secured to the side of the platen, a side registering member slidably mounted on said bracket, a cam lever for operating said side registering member, said cam lever being operable by the said platen operating means.
2. The combination with a platen press, the platen and its operating means, of a side registering device comprising a bracket secured to the side of the platen, a side reg tering member slidably mounted on said bracket, a cam lever operable by contact with the said platen operating means to operate said registering member to side register a sheet on the platen by a movement in one direction and a spring for antomaticall operating said registering member in the opposite direction.
3. The combination with a platen press,
the platen and connecting rod for operating the platen, of a side registering device comprising a side register member, a cam lever for movine the same by contact with the said connecting rod. during the impression stroke of the press to register a sheet of the platen and a spring for moving said side registering member out of registering position during the opening stroke of the press.
CARL F. FRAUENBERGER.
