[Class 100(iv)] Inking-apparatus.-The type-carriers of a printing-machine, shown as settable type-wheels 1 in a laundry-marking machine comprising a platen 6 carried by a rocking arm 8, are inked by a pad 14 normally in contact with a supply pad 11 and adapted to be moved by a reciprocating member 20 actuated from the arm 8 to ink the line of types in printing position and to return to normal position while the platen 6 is moving toward but short of the printing position, a normally-operative latch 17 being provided which is adapted to be released by a knock-off device before the platen reaches the printing position, and a spring 32 for returning the member 20 when the latch is released. The pad 14 is carried by an arm 15 rocked about a pivot shaft 36 by means of a pin 37 carried by a cam 21 pivoted at 34 to the member 20 which is slidable vertically. During the first part of the upward movement of the arm 8 which has a hub 9 turning about a shaft 10, an arm 16 mounted on the hub turns clockwise and pulls down the latch 17 which carries a stud 24 passing through a bracket 18 fixed to the member 20 whereby the latter descends causing the pad 14 to travel from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that of Fig. 11; a spring 26 between the bracket 18 and nuts 27 on the stud determines the pressure of the pad 14 on the types. A pin 31 on the arm 16 subsequently releases the latch 17 whereupon the pad 14 returns to normal position. The pad 14 is maintained horizontal by a rod 29 fixed to the pad carrier and passing through a swivel 30. The pad 11 consists of a wick dipping in a container 12. The pads, member 20, latch 17 and rod 29 form a detachable unit carried by a bracket 41.
