[Class 73] [Also in Group XVI] Apparatus for affixing patterns on cards of the kind described in Specification 381,279 and comprising a vertically reciprocating head which carries the card, and a horizontallyreciprocating carrier on which are mounted, at opposite ends, gumming pads and piles of patterns, is provided with means for automatically feeding the cards to the head, with means for maintaining the gumming-pads moist, and with means for inking the type carried on the pattern carrier. As shown in Fig. 2, the cards 19 are carried in an inclined pile and fed by intermittently rotated rollers 20, 22 to a reciprocating gripper 30 which carries the separated card under holding members 2 on the vertically reciprocating head 1. The rollers 20, 22 are operated by a rack 23 having a member the head 26 of which is engaged by a member 25 projecting from the horizontally reciprocating carrier 3 ; a free wheel device allows the rack to make an idle return. The grippers are actuated through an arm 47 engaging adjustable stops 43 and the gripper head is guided by means of ways 42a, 42c, 42d whereby its return stroke is at a lower level than its forward stroke so as to miss the head 1. The gumming pads 10, Fig. 5, are surrounded by wire frames 52 having projections 55 whereby on each operation of the head 1 the frames are depressed into the gum and smear the edges of the pads. The patterns 12, Fig. 6, and printing formes 58, 59 are carried in a container 5, the patterns being supported by studs 80 which, by means of a pin and cam-slot device, are lowered to allow the formes to project above the surface for inking. Inking is effected by a roller 60, Fig. 8, carried on a pivoted, spring-influenced arm .62 which is reciprocated from a position in contact with inking rollers to its operative position by means of a member 64 vertically reciprocated by cam-slot mechanism. The ends of the inking roller axle carry discs engaging rubber tracks to ensure rotation of the roller. The card with its attached pattern is delivered between pressure rollers.
