Abstract

Alcohols prepared by the catalytic reaction of oxides of carbon with hydrogen or gases containing hydrogen are purified, after separation by fractional distillation, by subjecting them to a distillation with an addition of an alcohol of lower boiling point. The alcohols may be preliminarily purified by a catalytic treatment with hydrogen, the catalyst containing metals, oxides, or sulphides of the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th or 8th group of the periodic system, for example, copper. In examples, crude propyl alcohol is distilled with methanol, and isobutyl alcohol with methanol or ethanol.ALSO:Alcohols prepared by the catalytic reaction of oxides of carbon with hydrogen or gases containing hydrogen are purified, after separation by fractional distillation, by subjecting them to a distillation with an addition of an alcohol of lower boiling point. The alcohols may be preliminarily purified by a catalytic treatment with hydrogen, the catalyst containing metals, oxides or sulphides of the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th or 8th group of the periodic system, for example, copper.
