Abstract

A hydrogenation catalyst containing nickel, manganese, aluminium, and silica is prepared by treating the metal oxides with a silicon ester, hydrolysing, and reducing as described in Specification 397,295.ALSO:An anti-knock motor fuel, and higher boiling hydrocarbons for use as solvents, kerosene, diesel oil, and lubricants are produced by passing a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen in a ratio between 1 : 2 and 1 : 1, preferably 1 : 1,17, by volume over a cobalt or nickel catalyst at a temperature of about 200 DEG C. and a pressure not exceeding 3 atmos., separating the product boiling below 150 DEG C. from the higher boiling product, catalytically hydrogenating the latter above 120 DEG C. at atmospheric or increased pressure, and fractionating the resultant product to separate fractions for use as solvents, oils, and lubricants. The initial synthesis may be effected in a plurality of stages with removal of products between stages. A suitable catalyst contains nickel, oxides of manganese and aluminium, and kieselguhr. The initial gas may contain, e.g. carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water vapour. The higher boiling products may be vaporized and passed with hydrogen over a catalyst containing nickel, manganese, aluminium, and silica obtained by treating the metal oxides with a silicon ester, hydrolysing, and reducing as described in Specification 397,295, [Group III]. In an example, the synthesis product is fractionated giving fractions boiling up to 150 DEG C., from 150-200, and 200-320 DEG C. The two latter are separately hydrogenated, and the total hydrogenated product fractionally distilled.
