Abstract

Isopropylnaphthalene containing the beta isomer is purified to increase the activity of the beta isomer towards hydroperoxide type oxidation in the manufacture of beta naphthol by contacting the isopropylnaphthalene with an alkali metal hydroxide and fractionally distilling at a temperature below 200 DEG C. in the absence of molecular oxygen to obtain a fraction free from naphthalene boiling in the range of isopropylnaphthalene. The preferred alkali metal hydroxide is sodium hydroxide in an amount of 0.05 to 10 per cent. Treatment may be in the form of a separate step in which case the isopropylnaphthalene is removed as a layer, or the separation may be effected by distillation preferably using a pressure below 150 mm. using an inert gas such as nitrogen, steam or carbon dioxide to displace the air. In addition organic compounds such as benzyl alcohol, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, glycerol or glycol may be added to form azeotropes with the naphthalene. The process may be applied, not only to the treatment of mixed alpha and beta-isopropylnaphthalene obtained directly from the propylation of naphthalene, but also to the isopropylnaphthalene recovered from an oxidation process in which part of the beta isopropylnaphthalene has been removed by conversion to the hydroperoxide by selective oxidation.
