445,421. Motor-vehicle axles; mounting motors. TENNANT, W. J., 111, Hatton Garden, London.-(Tatra Works Ltd. Motor & Railway Carriage & Wagon Builders ; 200, Kartouzska, Smichov, Prague) Oct. 3, 1934, No. 28327. [Classes 79 (iii) and 79 (iv)] In vehicles in which the road wheels are driven by separate motors and are mounted on independent part axles swinging about longitudinal axes, the motors are disposed remote from the centre line of the vehicle preferably near the vehicle sides. Space is thus afforded for a low central gang-way in the vehicle. In the construction shown, each road wheel 1 is mounted on an axle casing 4<a> pivoted by lugs 8 to the body 10 so as to swing about an axis Y. An electric motor 7 is carried by the axle casing and drives the road wheel through gearing 6, 5 and 3, 2 which allows the axles to be so spaced that the motors can be placed between them as shown. The gear pinions 3 may be located at the same level as the road wheel axes, or as shown, they may be below these axes so that the whole of the centre line of each swinging axle is below the road wheel axis and the vehicle body may be correspondingly lower. The axle pivots may be situated between the motors and the road wheels as described in Specification 428,017, [Group XXXII], so that the masses on each side of each pivot may be balanced.
