Abstract
567,097. Motor vehicles. NORTH, O. D., HUGH, P. G., and SCAMMELL LORRIES, Ltd. Feb. 2. 1943, No. 1711. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iv)] Driving wheels 1, 2 are mounted on a balance arm 5, the pivot 11 of which is below the line joining the road wheel centres, the height B being preferably <2>/3 of the height A. The wheels are driven from a pinion 7 through idlers 8 and gears 6, the ratio of the gearing being preferably 6 : 1. 'With these proportions the effective load on the front wheel 1 is less than the load on the rear wheel 2 ; the proportions may be varied to equalize the loads on the wheels, as by altering the height B of the pivot or by changing the gear ratio. The balance arm 5 may have a pair of wheels at each end, and is pivoted at 11 on a transverse member or axle 12. The arm constitutes a gear casing as described in Specifications 301,223, [Class 79 (ii)], 403,713 and 501,242, and is made in three parts connected by joints 9. The pinions 7 are driven through universal and telescopic joints 19, 20, 21 from a differential gear 15 mounted in a casing 13 fixed to the axle 12. Specification 266,272, [Class 79 (ii)], also is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, the pivotal supports for the balance arms may be rigidly mounted on the vehicle frame or connected thereto by springs.
