454,464. Electric motor wheels. TENNANT, W. J., 111, Hatton Garden, London.-(Tatra Works Ltd. Motor Car & Railway Carriage & Wagon Builders; 200, Kartouzska, Smichov, Prague) Sept. 16, 1935, No. 25644. [Class 79 (iii)] A trolly-bus or other vehicle in which each driving wheel 14 has an electric motor 4, 5 disposed inside the rim of the wheel, is characterized in that the motor and its wheel are mounted on the end of a half-axle 1 swinging in a transverse plane and pivoted at or near the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. In the construction shown the half-axle is pivoted at 2 to a central frame member 3, and its inner end may be straight as shown in full lines or bent as shown in broken lines. The half-axle is preferably hollow to contain the motor leads and the motor stator 4 is fixed on its end. The rotor 5 drives the wheel hub 9 through non-epicyclic reducing gearing, a pinion 6 on the rotor and internal teeth 8 on the wheel hub both engaging with gears 7 mounted on fixed spindles. The hub is provided with a brake drum 10 and a removable cover 13 through which the motor may be inspected or removed.
