Abstract
443,948. Treating furnace flue dust. LAURIE, D. NORTHALL-, 41, Lyncroft Gardens, Kilburn, London. Nov. 9, 1935, No. 31086. [Class 51 (i)] In a process for treating the dust obtained from the combustion of coal in boiler and other furnaces in order to avoid stickiness in the dust and to prevent its adhering to surfaces over which it passes, such as the surfaces of heat exchange apparatus, a certain amount of dry lime or other alkali in a finely divided state is introduced into the dust and at the same time the amount of moisture in the flue gases carrying the dust is controlled within certain limits. The degree of humidity of the flue gases is maintained at between 1.5 and 2 grammes per cubic foot measured at N.T.P., by analyzing the gas at intervals and accordingly regulating the amount of water added to the coal immediately before it is fed on to the grate. Within these limits of humidity, the amount of finely divided lime required is about one-tenth of the weight of sulphur in the coal. The alkali is fed in measured quantities from a hopper a by means of an adjustable measuring slide b reciprocated by a crank f and falls into a chamber g from which it is blown into a pipe h opening into the top of the furnace k and mixes with the flue gases passing over a wall n and down the flue o containing heat-exchange apparatus p.
