Abstract
<PICT:0716186/III/1> Sulphur-containing ferric oxide to be used, e.g. as a weed-killer, is propelled by screw action through a heated chamber from end to end thereof, the action on the oxide being such that it is continually divided and agitated as it is propelled, whilst steam is passed over the oxide to heat and scavenge it thoroughly whereby it is deodorized whilst retaining a high sulphur content. In Fig. 1, the oxide in a finely divided state is fed from a row of hoppers 10 into a series of tubes 4 through which the oxide is caused to pass by means of a helically twisted plate 11 extending from end to end thereof. Steam is passed in by means of a valved inlet 6 and discharges together with other gases and the oxide at 7. The tubes are heated by means of the furnace 5 to a temperature just short of red heat.ALSO:Sulphur-containing ferric oxide is deodorized by means of steam (see Group III) for use as a herbicide.
